Cartridges 101

Cartridges are a great way to start getting a more concentrated effect than flower, but without jumping head-first into concentrates. Like anything else we have talked about so far, there are a few things to keep in mind when selling, or even buying a cartridge for yourself. They are great for maintaining your effect and are super handy for being on-the-go.

Cartridges come in a variety of formulations and vary from being disposable, to a completely unique system for that specific brand.

Let’s first go over how a cartridge comes:

  • All-In-One / Disposable: Cart and battery come all in one piece, is meant to be thrown away after use, super easy to use to get started on cartridges

  • 510 Thread: Screws into a battery. The most common for a non-disposable.

Now if someone is getting a 510 Thread, they will NEED a battery.

Battery Types:

  • Auto Draw: Typically just a drop-in battery or a twist-top battery that does not have any buttons (or perhaps just a power button).

  • Pros: Auto-Draws are nice because they will not work unless they are being puffed on.

  • Cons: The drawback to an Auto-Draw is that they cannot change the voltage, so sometimes you can burn certain terpenes and cannabinoids too hot (or too cold).

  • Variable Voltage: Variable Voltage batteries are exactly what they sound like, they typically have a dial to change the voltage being delivered.

  • Pros: They are nice because they are able to change for the different terpenes and cannabinoids, to ensure they are not being burned too hot, or consumed under-temp.

  • Cons: Some variable voltage ones come as a stick battery, and some people do not like the sticks because they do not travel that well. They are prone to snapping in your pocket, and carts tend to leak more when they are not stored perfectly upright when not in use.

  • Unique System: Systems like 710 Pods, AIRO, Stiiizy, Select Cliq, and others use a specific battery and cartridge system that the carts/pods only work with their specific battery. They are not interchangeable between brands.

Now that you know the difference between the types of cartridges and batteries we sell, let’s get into the very basics of what’s in them!

  • Distillate: Most processed, like Fast Food. Distillate is a concentrated, liquid form of THC. Because of the extraction and purification processes, THC distillate typically does not have any scent or aroma, making it a product that’s perfect for cannabis consumers who don’t like the marijuana flavor. THC distillate lends itself well to a variety of consumption methods, including edibles, dabbing, infusions, and more

  • Live Resin: Less processed, like Applebees. Live resin takes a freshly frozen plant, that is then pressed into its liquid form. Resin uses a solvent, typically butane, to be blown through the material to achieve the liquid.

  • Hash Rosin: Least processed, like Home Cooked. Rosin uses heat and pressure to get the liquid. The Hash part comes from when they wash the freshly frozen plant in an ice bath, it becomes bubble hash, and that is then pressed using heat and pressure to get your liquid/waxy consistency. Because of this process, the yields are not nearly as much as the other ways, which is why these products tend to be the most expensive.

  • Cannabis-Derived Terpenes: The opposite of botanical terps, cannabis-derived terpenes will be the terps that make the cannabis plant smell and taste like cannabis. Stiiizy will also use Cannabis-Derived Terpenes in their carts (as indicated by the white packaging) and those are the carts that are the most “weed tasting.” Lots of companies will use cannabis derived terpenes and that’s, again, to make sure their distillate actually has a flavor and/or scent.

  • Botanical Terpenes: Companies will tend to add back in “botanical terpenes” (a fancy way of saying artificial flavor) to give their distillate a flavor. Typically the botanical terpenes will be fruity (watermelon, grape, lemon) but sometimes they will add a botanical terpene and it will have a more natural taste but doesn’t quite taste like the actual plant. Stiiizy is really good for adding their botanical terpenes to their carts that say “____ flavor” but ALSO the ones that DO NOT have the extra fruity flavor.
