Edibles 101
THC edibles come in many, many forms and with various levels of THC and even other cannabinoids. We’ll go over the most common edible types, and differences in formulation.
First, let’s break it down to the formulation of the edible. Unless specified that it was made with nano-technology, it’s typically a conventional edible, meaning it will take around 45 - 120 minutes to feel the effects, and most importantly, it’s broken down by the liver. These edibles will only reach its maximum effectiveness on a full stomach (it needs something to bind to) and people that have liver disease or issues, typically do NOT feel the desired effects. A fatty liver will also contribute to this because it does not break down the THC as quickly as it should to feel the effects (which also explains why people sometimes complain of feeling the effects of edibles for hours and hours as well).
Nano-technology, or water soluble, edibles actually get broken down by the blood stream. They do not require fats to bind to, and they typically hit a lot faster because of this as well. A typical nan-tech edible, you’ll feel the effects in around 15 - 45 minutes. This is also a really good option for those that say they don’t ever feel the effects of a conventional edible. These edibles are also sometimes referred to as “Quick Acting” and that’s because of the on-set time being much shorter than a conventional edible.
It’s also a good idea to remind your customers that the effect of edibles is NOT the same as flower or concentrates. Edibles are going to be a body experience, great for pain relief, and even anxiety.
Also remind them that the time it takes to feel the effects is a guideline and NOT a guarantee.
Some edibles come with CBD, CBN, or even CBG in them. What does this mean for the customer?
Well, now that you’ve completed your Cannabinoid Scavenger Hunt, you should be able to recall the products we carry that are not just THC. Keep these in mind when customers come in with specific ailments they are trying to treat. Remember, the Wyld brand has the most options for other cannabinoids.
Also keep in mind that CBD metabolizes faster than THC. If a customer states that THC makes them feel weird or they don’t want to feel “high” at all, offer them a ration that is higher in CBD than THC so that the CBD will last longer.
So if a customer is brand new to edibles, what should they know?
Start Low, Go Slow is the name of the edible game. Encourage customers to eat their edibles and wait the recommended time before adding more, as they can hit them all at once and then the customer will be having a bad time! We don’t want their first experience with edibles to be a negative one!
Even if a customer is a “pro” at edibles, still encourage them to Start Low, Go Slow until they are familiar with that brand’s particular dosing and effects.
For example, Good Tide tells you right on the front that it’s 10mg THC per SERVING.
Underneath that disclaimer, they show that a SERVING is a HALF of a gummy. This means that if you take a whole gummy, you’re actually consuming 20mg, NOT 10mg.
MICRODOSE: 1 -5 mg per piece
AVERAGE DOSE: 10 mg per piece
MACRO DOSE/HIGH DOSE: 20 mg or higher per piece
